SoumitraDev,renowned poet, journalist
and cultural figure, passed away at 9 am last Tuesday (April 15) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in
Kurmitolain the capital.He was 55-
He was suffering fromvarious
physical complications including
respiratory problems for a breathing problems for a few days.
On Tuesday morning, April 14, he suddenly felt very ill. He was then rushed to a
private hospital in Khilkhet area. Later, the
doctor on duty declared him dead."
To mention, Soumitra Dev started his career as journalist in local newspapers in Sylhet and Moulvibazar. Later, he wrote as a contributor for Prothom Alo.long time. He is survived by his only son, wife and three
sister along with many well wishers.While talking to the

After working in this position for a few years, he has been serving as the editor-in-chief of the online newspaper RedTimes.com.bd since 2009.Poet Soumitra Deb was attacked in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on October 19, 2024, during a protest rally organized by the Creative Writers Association to protest the cancellation of the national (days of mourning) on March 7 and August 15. He was beaten and assaulted that day.Poet Soumitra Dev Kabi was a politically conscious person apart from journalism. He was elected as the nominated candidate of the Workers Party for the post of mayor in the Moulvibazar municipality election.
A shadow of mourning descended on Moulvibazar district when the poet's body was brought to his birthplace, Moulvibazar. The body was kept at the East Government High School grounds next to the local Shaheed Minar, where poets, artists and cultural activists, along with people from various organizations and professions, paid their respects. Later, his funeral was held at Sayarpur crematorium in Moulvibazar town at 8:30 pm.
